Immerse yourself in the past while exploring this site and its pre-Roman chapel, surrounded by the forest, in the heart of the Ségala region.
In early times, humans appeared to be attracted by the Verdun site, which name comes from the Celtic language and refers to a promontory hillfort.
Remains of this military function are still there, though they are not as aged as the Gallic era: the tower and the walls still visible were erected during the Middle Age.
The site's climax is undoubtedly the Saint-Clair Chapel - classified as a historical monument. Built at the end of the first millennium, it is ornated with wall paintings carried out in 15th-century Flamboyant Gothic style.
Visited for ages by pilgrims who came to pray to Saint Clair, it was abandoned in the 1950's.
After decades of desertion, the place comes back to life under the leadership of the Saint-Clair de Verdun Association, that is dedicated to restoring and livening up the site.
