Château de Pagax Flagnac Heritage

Pagax, a major 12th-century fortress, was a mandatory—and toll-charging—transit point!Situated on this commanding height, it controlled all the surrounding valleys as well as the heavily traveled route from the Abbey of Conques to Figeac.

Originally a major medieval fortress, it was converted into a château around 1259 to serve as the residence of a noble royal official, thereby cementing the authority of the King of France in the region.

Situated on a commanding height, it controlled all the surrounding valleys as well as the busy route from the Abbey of Conques to Figeac (part of the Way of St. James, or Via Podiensis).

The name "Pagax" or "Pagas" pronounced "paguasse" and derived from the Latin Pagus (referring to a fiscal district or payment)—clearly reflects this role of controlling a mandatory, toll-bearing passage.

The château was enclosed by ramparts and towers, and protected by moats and a drawbridge. It underwent modifications over the centuries; the most significant changes occurred during the Renaissance, when large mullioned windows were installed to let light into the imposing residence.

Through various alliances, several prominent noble families held the château in succession until 1773. These included the de Mellet, de Montarnal, and de Moret families—all known for their vast estates, military service, and distinguished connections that linked them to the kingdom's leading noble houses.

Shortly before the Revolution, the château was sold to a certain Monsieur Brunet, a native of Conques. Having already owned the Château de Privezac—located just a few leagues from Pagax—he had previously clashed with local peasants as unrest mounted in the countryside. Consequently, in 1789, to prevent a similar scenario at Pagax, Brunet himself burned his feudal title deeds and had the tops of the château’s towers removed to avert the building's sacking.
