Saint-Jean-et-Saint-Paul
Come and discover an extraordinary monument located in the village's center of Saint-Jean-d'Alcas, in southern Aveyron, just a few kilometres from Roquefort-sur-Soulzon and about thirty minutes by car from Millau !
Built in the 15th century to protect the local population from the turmoil caused by the Hundred Years' War, it remained until the French Revolution the symbol of the power of the Ladies of Nonenque, the neighbouring Cistercian nuns who had administered this territory since the 12th century.
Guided tours of the Fort des Dames reveal an unusual history that challenges preconceived notions about the medieval period. From the cobbled streets to the ramparts and refuge rooms, visitors will discover more than just a cleverly planned defensive structure. It is also the story of pious, powerful and even ambitious women, sometimes severe, sometimes fair to the villagers in their service, that you come to hear.
