Walk through the alleyways of this charming village and discover the copper foundries !
Founded in 1280 by Bishop (Evêque) Raymond de Calmont, La Bastide was built on a granite plateau overlooking the Aveyron gorges, where copper was worked in water powered forges (martinets). The village is full of character and has retained the traditional layout of a bastide (fortified walled town): parallel streets crossed at right angles by lanes (carreirous). The church of Saint John the Baptist, with its bell tower in pink granite dominates the central square.
Amateur historians will be astonished by the diversity and richness of the built heritage: nearby you'll find the “martinet” de la Ramonde, Chateau de Requista (private), the Gallo-Roman bridge at Cayla and four churches, all bearing witness to man's activity and ingenuity over the years. There are several clearly marked walks so you can take full advantage of this special environment.
The locals are well known for their hospitality. They get together throughout the year at traditional summer fêtes, during the Bastide Festival, at the Martinet night market or the producers' markets. They are just waiting to share all this with you.
