Forteresse Royale de Najac
The 12th and 13th century royal fortress is an extraordinary example of military defences It was actively used in the fight against the Cathars and the Hundred Years war. Its dungeon served as a prison for the last Knights of the Rouergue.
Built by the Counts of Toulouse at a time when they were as powerful as the king of France, Najac Fortress will fascinate children and adults as it contains examples of all the tricks and stratagems used in the military art of defence. A large model is on hand to throw light on the incomparable defence system perfected in the 13th Century by Alphonse de Poitiers. Listed monument.
