A visit to Mélac Castle – European Heritage Days

Mélac, "repaire" -fortified wealthy house- that once belonged to the Gozon family, one of its member became a Grand Master of the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, the castle was later owned by the Montcalm family.

The castle has four main buildings which were originally interconnected by 4 Renaissance towers (only 3 of them remain today) and form an amazing inner courtyard with an arched gallery. Worth seeing: vaulted guards room with rib tufa stone dating from the 14th century, Renaissance round tower and its cupola storeys, stables, store room, Roquefort maturing cave called “bâtarde” because situated outside the municipality of Roquefort and which was formerly a confinement cell.
