Sauveté de La Salvetat Peyralès

As its name suggests, La Salvetat is a former "sauveté" or place of refuge, founded in the 12th century by a religious community, probably from Rodez. The village was fortified at the time of the Hundred Years' War and some traces of the walls still exist. The former moat was there until the 1950's. The church (Sainte Croix or Holy Cross) has undergone several transformations. No trace remains of the exterior of the former Roman church- the present building dates from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It has two renaissance reliquaries, classed as historic monuments.

A former place of refuge (“sauveté“) founded in the 12th century, La Salvetat has kept some traces of its medieval ramparts, Saint Anthony's Gate and the church Square. But it's outside the village that you'll find most of the important historical monuments: a multitude of stone or cast iron crosses; the 11th century chapel of Notre Dame at Murat, the Oratory at Romette (15th and 16th century), the castle of Roumegous (15th century) and the 11th century Chateau de Peyroles, the master of which exercised power and jurisdiction over the whole region of “Peyralès”, from which the village takes its name.

But La Salvetat doesn't just have a rich history; it's a lively agricultural village with well attended fortnightly cattle markets. The farmers here breed high quality cattle, mostly from the Limousine breed, while working with nature and contributing to the maintenance of the magnificent countryside.

You'll find a warm welcome in gîtes and B&Bs as well as in the local shops and businesses. You can relax in unspoiled scenery at the natural recreation area at La Roque on the banks of the Viaur or take one of the many marked paths which are just waiting for you to discover the natural and built heritage which La Salvetat has to offer.
