The natural landscape of the Aveyron is so extraordinarily rich and the scenery so spectacular that it takes your breath away. Wild moorland, vast blue lakes, rolling hills, tumbling rivers and waterfalls, fertile valleys and soft limestone plateaux sliced through by the most dramatic gorges this side of Arizona. Forests and woodland that shelter deer and wild boar; grasslands strewn with poppies, narcissi and wild orchids; skies where kestrels, eagles and even vultures fly free.

And this richly varied landscape is criss-crossed by thousands of way-marked walks. From wide-open heathland paths to narrow stony tracks; gentle family strolls to strenuous ascents of 2,000 vertical feet or more. There are routes that follow in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims, take you through Knights Templar settlements or simply allow you to lose yourself in the splendour of landscape.

Just call into the Office de Tourisme in any Aveyron town and they’ll tell you all about the best walks in the area. Alternatively, invest a few euros in a Topoguide – a handbook that sets out a selection of routes, complete with maps and written directions.
