Prehistoric cave and park of Foissac - Aveyron

See spectacular minerals, works of art sculpted by nature. Over thousands of years, water has carved these magnificent works with subtle colours and gentle forms, from minute formations to majestic and grandiose motifs, craggy, ivory-white, splendid hanging porches and sumptuous backdrops. It is a feast for the eyes as well as a lesson in humility for young and old alike, a veritable underground museum.

Observe objects and mortal remains left by our ancestors, 4000 years ago, telling us about their life style. These deposits date from before the bronze age (2000 BC). The cave served as a shelter for men and their animals. It is a rich reserve of clay, which explains the exceptional pottery found intact. It served as a burial place for the dead, with skeletons intact on the banks of the subterranean river. Carefully sharpened, flint arrow-heads are on display along with the remains of animals, bears, lions and more.
Such treasures have earned the cave its status as a listed historic monument.
